Real-time Operations Management Solution (ROMS): Optional Modules

The optional modules of the CGI ROMS solution suite extend functionality in order to further improve day-to-day reliability, management and monitoring of daily network operations.

PragmaSWITCH

Dynamic Operations Management for Distribution Networks

PragmaSWITCH is the switching and workflow consolidation module of the CGI ROMS solution suite.  Designed originally for analyzing and managing utility connectivity networks at all levels, PragmaSWITCH's extensibility and flexibility makes it adaptable to any network-centric service provider.  PragmaSWITCH provides user-friendly tools for the management, preparation, simulation and validation of complex switch plans.

The PragmaSWITCH module handles network management services for the ROMS solution suite, providing operators with a high degree of control over the ROMS connectivity model.  PragmaSWITCH facilitates the creation, editing, validation and execution of switching plans by providing a unified step editing interface from which all network management operations are driven.  PragmaSWITCH operates in concert with the PragmaUP call and outage management module to automate the creation of scheduled outages and the notification of customers who will lose supply as a result.  All ad hoc network management operations performed on the PragmaVIEWS graphical applications are automatically archived to a daily log maintained and accessible through the PragmaSWITCH application, to ensure visibility and accountability are maintained throughout the restoration or maintenance operation.

M3iCall

Flexible Call and Data Management via the Web

M3iCALL is a flexible, web-based call-taking client application created as a module of the M3i™ ROMS solution suite.  The M3iCALL application responds to the requirement of efficient entry of high volumes of customer call data, all the while providing the operator with up-to-date outage and crew status information.  M3iCALL has been implemented as a Java™ applet, which allows the small footprint and portability that are the hallmarks of the Java™ Runtime Environment to simplify deployment and maintenance.  The re-configurable client interface provides search engine capabilities for uniquely identifying customers based on multiple criteria.  The M3iCALL graphical user interface also allows operators to submit incoming calls for automated notification, either for call-back confirmation of service restoration or wake-up call purposes.

Circuit Explorer

Interactive, Powerful Network Schematic Views

Circuit Explorer is the real-time one-line diagram management module in the CGI ROMS solution suite.  Circuit Explorer automatically generates one-line diagrams from the Distribution Network Inventory (DNI) database, which contains all network connectivity data, as well as any event-related information affecting the network.  All modifications to the DNI database are immediately reflected in the diagrams.  Circuit Explorer is connected through a database-to-graphical display link, which activates network representations available in both PragmaSWITCH and PragmaVIEWS.  The basic features of Circuit Explorer are extended further by this ability to switch between geo-schematic and ortho-schematic views.  All indicators and symbols are activated automatically to alert the operator to an event, when their associated devices or equipment is damaged or malfunctioning.

Alarm and Event Manager

Centralized Information Hub for Network Event Management

The Alarm and Event Manager (AEM) is the configurable, Java™-based responsive alarm monitor in the CGI ROMS solution suite.  Sitting unobtrusively on the desktop, AEM alerts operators to events, jobs or requests in real-time that require operator awareness or intervention.  These alarms are configured and generated from within each operator's control or dispatch zone (see Control Zone Manager).  Alarms are classified according to their severity, and the operator can accept, clear or view them as necessary.

Event Replay

Configurable, Adaptive Training and Simulation Tool

End-user training is an integral part of the deployment of the CGI ROMS solution suite.  The Event Replay module facilitates the creation of real-world training scenarios where hundreds of thousands of customers are potentially without power.  The Event Replay module has two major modes of operation:

  1. Search Mode: An interactive search engine will allow operators to retrieve past outages based on multiple criteria.
  2. Create Mode: Operators can create new outage events based on the input of geographic- or network-related parameters.

Outages created in either operational mode can be stored and retrieved at will for playback by the Event Replay module, and the operator is presented with several execution options including control over the rate at which the outages are created.  In addition to its primary purpose, the Event Replay module is extremely useful for performance and load testing purposes, capable of simulating large-scale outage events.

Control Zone Manager

Intelligent Filtering and Notification Routing

The Control Zone Manager (CZM) is an efficient and intelligent control and dispatch zone manager module in ROMS.  Designed specifically for control engineers and dispatchers, the CZM helps operators to clearly define and manage ownership of those zones.  The CZM is a hierarchy of control entities, the largest of which is the Control Groups, which extend over an entire network.  These are subdivided into Control Areas (which generally cover all the feeders from a primary substation), and at the lowest level, one or more Control Zones, which include all the network circuitry.  Operators are assured complete and independent managerial responsibility for their respective groups, areas and zones.

Substation Modeling

Multiple Voltage Level Network Control and Overview

Substation Modeling is the powerful voltage level network monitor in the CGI ROMS solution Suite.  The Substation Modeling option provides high-level operators the ability to navigate upstream to the highest-voltage substation to locate the actual origin of the outage on the power grid.  Built upon the same feature-rich graphics functionality as the PragmaVIEWS module, the substation schematic views incorporate high-voltage device and multiple feeder lockout functionality to streamline outage analysis and restoration efforts.  Control room personnel are able to control, query and operate devices within the substation representation.  These operations are instantly reflected within the ROMS model and are respected by the call grouping and analysis routines.

GIS Import

The M3i™ GISImport application is a user-friendly graphical interface designed to import the connectivity data exported from AM/FM/GIS applications and processes by defining each piece of distribution-level equipment along with their geographical location, their relationship to the right circuit and all unique structures within the system.  Once one or multiple sets of circuit information data files have been imported, PragmaVIEWS utilizes this data to display the interactive geographic renderings of the feeders.  The GISImport process performs various structural, geographical, connectivity and integrity validations to ensure "as-built" circuit configurations needed for successful outage restoration processes.
